What Happens After We Receive a Tech Pack? A Look Inside the Knitwear Development Process

When a brand sends us a tech pack, many people assume the next step is simple:
The factory checks the file, calculates the price, and starts making the sample.
In reality, this is rarely how knitwear development works.
A tech pack provides important information, but it is only the beginning of the conversation between a brand and a manufacturer.
Before making any sample, there are many details that need to be reviewed carefully. Some problems are easy to notice. Others only become clear when we think about how the sweater will actually be knitted, finished, and produced in bulk.
After working on different knitwear projects, we've learned that the preparation before sampling often determines the success of the entire development process.

The First Step: Understanding the Product, Not Making the Sample

The first thing we do after receiving a tech pack is not sending it directly to the knitting department.
We review the product as a whole.
Our team usually checks:
  • The garment construction
  • Yarn composition and yarn requirements
  • Knitting gauge
  • Stitch details
  • Measurements
  • Size grading
  • Finishing requirements
  • Labels and packaging details
At this stage, we are not only asking:
"Can we make this sweater?"
We are also asking:
"Is this the best way to make this sweater?"
Sometimes a design looks simple on paper but requires adjustments when translated into actual production.
For example, a certain stitch pattern may look attractive in a drawing, but the structure may behave differently when knitted with the selected yarn.

We Check Whether the Tech Pack Matches Reality

A tech pack is extremely helpful, but it doesn't always contain every detail needed for knitwear production.
One thing we often notice is that some first-time brands focus mainly on measurements and appearance but overlook technical information such as:
  • Desired garment weight
  • Fabric softness
  • Stretch and recovery
  • Stitch density
  • Washing requirements
  • Final hand feel
These details are important because knitwear is not only about measurements.
Two sweaters can have exactly the same measurements but feel completely different when worn.
One may feel lightweight and soft.
Another may feel heavier and more structured.
The difference often comes from yarn selection, knitting tension, and finishing.

The Questions We Usually Ask Before Sampling

Before starting a sample, we often confirm details that may not seem obvious at first.
For example:
"What market is this sweater designed for?"
A sweater designed for a premium boutique customer may require different yarns and finishing compared with a high-volume retail product.
"Do you have a target price?"
The same design can often be produced in different ways. Knowing the target price helps us recommend more suitable materials and production methods.
"Is the reference image for appearance only, or do you want the same construction?"
A photo can show the style, but it cannot always tell us the exact knitting method.
These conversations help prevent unnecessary changes later.

Common Problems We Find During the Sampling Stage

After receiving many different development projects, we've noticed that certain issues appear repeatedly.

1. The Yarn Looks Right, But Feels Different

This is one of the most common situations.
A customer may select a yarn based on composition alone.
For example:
"100% cotton"or"50% wool, 50% acrylic"
However, fiber composition is only one part of the final result.
Different yarn suppliers, yarn structures, and finishing methods can create very different hand feels.
A sweater made from two yarns with the same composition can still look and feel completely different.

2. The Measurements Are Correct, But the Fit Is Not Right

This is another issue we often see.
Sometimes the sample measurements match the tech pack perfectly, but the customer still feels something is wrong.
Why?
Because fit is influenced by more than numbers.
Factors such as:
  • Shoulder construction
  • Sleeve shape
  • Fabric weight
  • Stretch
  • Knitting structure
all affect how a sweater sits on the body.
This is why physical samples are so important.
A spreadsheet can show measurements.
Only a real garment can show the actual fit.

3. The Design Looks Good, But Production May Be Difficult

A sample is not only evaluated by appearance.
We also need to consider whether the design can be repeated consistently.
For example, a complicated jacquard pattern may look beautiful on one sample, but the production process needs to be stable enough to produce hundreds of pieces with consistent quality.
During development, we sometimes suggest small technical changes—not to change the customer's idea, but to make the final product more reliable.

A Real Situation We Encountered During Development

Recently, a customer sent us a tech pack for an oversized sweater with a relaxed silhouette.
The design looked straightforward, but after reviewing the details, we noticed that the requested yarn and knitting structure might make the garment heavier than expected.
The customer wanted a soft, loose-fitting sweater with a comfortable drape.
If we followed the original specifications without adjustment, the final garment might have looked too stiff.
Instead of changing the design, we suggested testing a different yarn structure and adjusting the knitting tension.
The revised sample achieved a softer shape while keeping the original design direction.
This is exactly why we believe communication before sampling is so important.
Many problems are easier to solve before the first sample is made.

Good Sampling Starts Before the Machine Starts

A successful sample is not created only by skilled knitting.
It starts with careful discussion, technical understanding, and attention to small details.
When a factory receives a tech pack, the most important first step is not production.
It is understanding the product.
Because every sweater has its own requirements.
The goal is not simply to make a sample that looks similar.
The goal is to create a product that can be produced consistently, meet the customer's expectations, and become a successful collection.
